After much deliberation, I decided I NEEDED to make this post to clear up a few misconceptions. I’m not even going to tag it, so if anyone that’s not supposed to see it does, it’s because they went looking for it. And if you all know me by now, you’ll know that I don’t take shit lying down.
I think, just to add my two cents into something that already seems to have been blasted way out of proportion - that if you didn’t know someone had already created the ‘character’ with this specific name, it is a victimless crime in many respects. If it wasn’t done on purpose, it was merely a matter that you had the same great idea that someone else already had. And with the amount of chatter regarding the ‘jasper stone’ in the show, honestly it is no wonder.
However, I believe that if youdid know, regardless of it being a non-copyrighted name, and you wished to use it in your own way, it would be good form to, at the very least, mention the author/work/etc that gave you the idea. You see it all the time in fanfiction/fanart. Someone comes up with a certain character, name, tradition, custom, in whatever fanfic/fandom - and people use it accordingly, often with a honorable mention as to where/who they were inspired from.
Us writers/artists create works daily that are based on copyrighted material. We know about common courtesy and respect when it comes to such things. After all, people use the same argument when they plagiarize from other writers/authors. “You don’t own it!” is the common shout from said douche canoes.
I don’t usually get involved in such things, but I have to say, I think people are really uptight right now. Today alone I have seen so much hatred being spewed between ships and frankly it is disgusting. Especially to those that are just innocent bystanders, happily plodding along shipping their ships, creating content, and yet, they get labeled as the bad guys.
I think it would be good to keep in mind there are asstrumpets in every ship, in every fandom, and to generalize such things is only doing the entire fandom a disservice.
That’s the thing. I was happily plodding along shipping my ship, and creating MY OWN content, and the next thing I know, I’m getting this accusation tossed in my face.
Like I said, I’m a video editor, an artist if you will, and I know all about the proper etiquette in giving someone credit when it is deserved. However, this was not the case. No one “took” their idea, as they had claimed. I combined the two because I am a romantic at heart, and it made sense to me at the time.
Jasper Dixon is a name, and one that is not copyrighted by the show. Anyone is allowed to use it, as I do not have any rights concerning it. It was simply the matter of two people having the same idea. Furthermore, I’m sure many other people have thought of the name as well.
